چکیده

The oxidation of methanol over highly dispersed vanadia supported on TiO2 (anatase) has been investigated using in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP XPS), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and a temperature-programmed reaction technique. The data were complemented by kinetic measurements collected in a flow reactor. It was found that dimethoxymethane competes with methyl formate at low temperatures, while the production of formaldehyde is greatly inhibited. Under the reaction conditions, the FTIR spectra show the presence of non-dissociatively adsorbed molecules of methanol, in addition to adsorbed methoxy, dioxymethylene, and formate species. According to the NAP XPS and XANES data, the reaction involves a reversible reduction of V cations, indicating that the vanadia lattice oxygen participates in the oxidation of methanol via the classical Mars–van Krevelen mechanism. A detailed mechanism for the oxidation of methanol on vanadia catalysts is discussed. 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Selective oxidation of methanol to dimethoxymethane under mild conditions over V2O5/TiO2 with enhanced surface acidity.

Dimethoxymethane was synthesized from the direct oxidation of methanol with high conversion and selectivity over specially designed bifunctional V(2)O(5)/TiO2 catalysts with redox and enhanced acidic character, in which the surface acidity played an essential role for inhibiting the formation of formaldehyde through the enhanced condensation reaction of formaldehyde with methanol to produce dim...

Photo-oxidation of Methanol Using Mo03/Ti02: Catalyst Structure and Reaction Selectivity

Laser Raman spectra, UV-visible spectra, and photo-catalytic activity measurements are described which show that supported MoO,iTiOr catalysts prepared by impregnation possess a layer of surface molybdate species coordinated to the titania support. The saturation coverage of this surface molybdate monolayer corresponds to a surface density of ca. 4 x lOI MO atoms per cm2 of TiO*. The properties...

DFT investigations for the reaction mechanism of dimethyl carbonate synthesis on Pd(II)/β zeolites.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to investigate the oxidative carbonylation of methanol on Pd(II)/β zeolite. Activation energies for all the elementary steps involved in the commonly accepted mechanism, including the formation of dimethyl carbonate, methyl formate and dimethoxymethane, are presented. Upon conducting the calculations, we identify that the Pd(2+) cation...

Mechanistic investigations on dimethyl carbonate formation by oxidative carbonylation of methanol over a CuY zeolite: an operando SSITKA/DRIFTS/MS study.

The simultaneous combination of steady state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) with diffuse reflectance Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and mass spectrometric (MS) analysis was applied to study the oxidative carbonylation of methanol (MeOH) to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) on a CuY zeolite catalyst prepared by incipient-wetness impregnation of commercial zeolite NH(4)-Y. The inter...

Effects of support on bifunctional methanol oxidation pathways catalyzed by polyoxometallate Keggin clusters

H5PV2Mo10O40 polyoxometallate Keggin clusters supported on ZrO2, TiO2, SiO2, and Al2O3 are effective catalysts for CH3OH oxidation reactions to form HCHO, methyl formate (MF), and dimethoxymethane (DMM). Rates and selectivities and the structure of supported clusters depend on the surface properties of the oxide supports. Raman spectroscopy showed that Keggin structures remained essentially int...
